Why Humanities?
This year, LWGMS will switch back to the Humanities model, which has proven effective in the school's history, particularly for 6th grade learners. Literally, the humanities are the study of "the human condition", or, the experience of being human. Read the description below from Stanford University for a brief description of the Humanities:
The humanities can be described as the study of the myriad ways in which people, from every period of history and from every corner of the globe, process and document the human experience. Since humans have been able, we have used philosophy, literature, religion, art, music, history and language to understand and record our world. These modes of expression have become some of the subjects that traditionally fall under the humanities umbrella. Knowledge of these records of human experience gives us the opportunity to feel a sense of connection to those who have come before us, as well as to our contemporaries.
For LWGMS students, this means that we will study literature, writing, history, social justice issues, as well as speech and debate all in one course! Our block class sessions are well suited for this rich opportunity for integration, and students will find that their learning informs each of these themes.
