Science 8 2009-10 Geolgy Field Trip to Mt. St. Helens

This year, the eighth grade class will travel to Mt. St. Helens National Volcanic Monument. We will see first hand the seismically active nature of Washington State. On the first day, we will view the volcano from the Johnston Ridge Observatory. The students will complete some activities that will highlight the structure of the volcano and the time line of the events of the spring of 1980.

The next day, we will visit Lava Canyon, Ape Caves, and the Trail of Two Forests south of the volcano. There we will see the evidence of previous volcanic eruptions. We will be able to appreciate some of the differences between the types of lava flows possible from one volcano.

On the third day, we will visit the Mima Mounds near Olympia, WA. We will debate the very different theories about the origin of the mounds.
