Welcome to LWGMS » LWGMS News » 2009 Summer Camps and Opportunities

We will try to maintain a list of summer camps and opportunities that would be appropriate for your middle school student. If a former or current student has participated in a camp, we will indicate that with Previously attended and highly recommended. Otherwise, the camp/opportunity is something that sounds great or was recommended to us. Please pass on other summer ideas to us. We will post them ASAP.

YouthPrograms - Summer 2009

YouthPrograms-summer2009
Attached is a fairly extensive list of summer opportunities. The list was put out by the TechReach, an organization that promotes the teaching of Science, Technology, and Mathematics to young people. However, the camps and opportunities listed extend beyond Math and Science. Because if is a PDF, I was not able to edit it to pertain only to middle school girls. Give it a look, you will find lots of worthy ideas.

NOAA Science Camp Previously attended and highly recommended

Held at NOAA’s Seattle facility at Sand Point, these five-day summer camp sessions offer opportunities for seventh and eighth graders to explore marine sciences and have fun at the same time. Participants are introduced to earth and ocean sciences and to science careers through hands-on activities emphasizing solutions to real-world problems.

The camp was established in 2003 through a partnership between Washington Sea Grant and NOAA’s Western Regional Center in Seattle. Because of the continuing popularity of this program, two sessions of camp will be offered in 2009. Pre-registration is not yet open, but continue to check this Web page http://www.wsg.washington.edu/education/events/noaa.html and secure your child’s spot by registering as soon as it is available.

Age fish and assess fish populations.
Identify different marine mammals by looking at tags and skulls.
Analyze water samples and see how buoys sample the ocean to help predict large-scale climate events.
Learn how to use marine navigation charts and practice your charting skills.
Learn about hazardous substances and how to respond to an oil spill.
Help track a weather balloon and see how air currents affect it.
To get an idea of a typical day, see sample schedule.
